  8. │ This record is a means of conveying information about a software   │

  131. ===== Installation =====================================

  133. To install the VENDINFO Basic Toolset, simply unzip or copy all files
  134. into a single directory, which will be devoted to VendEdit.  If you are
  135. an author, or you expect to create VENDINFO records for testing
  136. purposes, you should plan to leave all these files in that directory.
  137. If you are a distributor, and plan to use only VendPrcs, then it will
  138. eventually be appropriate for you to place VENDPRCS.EXE on your path,
  139. and many of these materials will not be needed after your
  140. familiarization with the toolset is complete.
  141.  
  142. Once you've installed this package:
  143.  
  144.    o  If you're an author, or wish to try out VendEdit, simply
  145.       execute the command "VENDEDIT" WHILE IN THE VendEdit DIRECTORY.
  146.       Select "Help", and read through the first few items in the
  147.       help index.  You should find all the information you need.
  148.  
  149.    o  If you're a distributor, or wish to try out VendPrcs, you
  150.       should begin by reading VENDPRCS.DOC.  For authors, the
  151.       basic VendPrcs functions are executed automatically from
  152.       VendEdit.

  159. The evaluation ("shareware") version of the VENDINFO toolset is provided
  160. for evaluation only, on an "as is" basis.  The registered version is
  161. provided with a 30-day money-back guarantee, provided all materials are
  162. returned, and -- in the case of the editor -- no products have been
  163. distributed with included VENDINFO files.  This toolset is intended for
  164. use by producers and distributors of shareware and similar products, who
  165. are assumed to be familiar with the use of software tools.  The included
  166. tools allow both production and evaluation of VENDINFO files, and
  167. provide all the capabilities necessary for the user to verify correct
  168. functioning of those tools for his/her purposes.  Users are advised to
  169. do so.

  199. copyrighted products of Rams' Island Software and are protected by
  200. United States copyright law and also by international treaty provisions.

  202. All rights not expressly granted here are reserved to Rams' Island
  203. Software.  The use or distribution of these products is expressly
  204. prohibited, except as authorized by the terms of this agreement.

  206. You may not use, copy, rent, lease, sell, modify, decompile,
  207. disassemble, otherwise reverse engineer, or transfer the licensed
  208. program except as provided in this agreement.

  210. U.S. Government Restricted Rights:  Use, duplication, or disclosure

  218. LICENSE TERMS APPLICABLE TO TRIAL USE OF EVALUATION VERSION

  220. Rams' Island Software grants you a limited license to use this software
  221. for evaluation purposes for a period not to exceed thirty days.

  223. During this evaluation period, you may make full use of the VENDINFO
  224. toolset, with the following exception, applicable only to the VendEdit
  225. editor.

  227.    You MAY NOT distribute VENDINFO.DIZ files that lack authentication
  228.    codes.  These codes are tied to your company name, and are produced
  229.    only by the registered version of VendEdit.  They are intended to
  230.    provide a level of source authentication for your VENDINFO.DIZ files.

  232. If you continue using this software after the thirty-day evaluation
  233. period, or wish to produce "authenticated" VENDINFO.DIZ files for
  234. distribution with your products, you MUST make the prescribed
  235. registration payment to Rams' Island Software.  (NOTE: Single-line
  236. BBSes which are not associated with a business, and which do not charge
  237. fees to their users, may register VendPrcs without charge; see
  238. REGISTER.FRM.)

  241. LICENSE TERMS APPLICABLE TO USE OF REGISTERED VERSION

  243. The software and the disks on which it is contained are licensed on
  244. a non-exclusive basis to you, the purchaser, for your own use.  You
  245. are not obtaining title to the software or any copyright rights.

  247. If you have purchased a license to use the VendEdit editor, you may
  248. also make use of the VendPrcs processor for the purpose of verifying
  249. correct functioning of VendEdit and correct contents of the VENDINFO.DIZ
  250. files you produce.  Any other use of VendPrcs requires a separate
  251. license.  Similarly, purchase of a VendPrcs license allows you to use
  252. VendEdit to verify correct functioning of VendPrcs, but does not imply
  253. a license for other use of VendEdit.

  255. You may use the licensed software on a single personal computer system,
  256. and make as many copies as needed for backup and archival purposes.

  261. LICENSE TERMS APPLICABLE TO ALL USE OF VendEdit EDITOR

  263. A fundamental goal of the VENDINFO system is that distributors must be
  264. able to rely upon automated testing to determine whether or not they
  265. may distribute your products.  Therefore, any VENDINFO file which is
  266. distributed with your products must satisfy these conditions:
  267.  
  268.    It must be an "authenticated" file, containing valid authentication
  269.    codes issued to you under your company name, or a company name you
  270.    are authorized to use for this purpose.
  271.  
  272.    The "License for Use and Distribution" section must contain the
  273.    actual text of your license agreement, rather than a pointer to
  274.    some other document, and must include the following statements or
  275.    their equivalent: "The attached VENDINFO data record is hereby
  276.    incorporated by reference.  Any distribution satisfying all the
  277.    distribution requirements expressed in that data record is hereby
  278.    authorized." (This means that distributors will NOT have to consult
  279.    the "License for Use and Distribution" text itself, UNLESS you select
  280.    "See Attached Text for Additional Requirements" in the data record.)

  282. The distributor also needs to be able to use the information you
  283. provide in the VENDINFO record without worrying about violating your
  284. copyright on the descriptions therein.  As a condition of use of
  285. VendEdit, you also agree that every distributor shall have the benefit
  286. of this understanding:

  288.    If the distributor satisfies your conditions for distributing the
  289.    product, you authorize the distributor's use of your unaltered
  290.    product descriptive texts without further permission.

  292. Finally, to keep any license disputes strictly between you and the
  293. distributor, you agree to this understanding:

  295.    All licenses to distribute package are solely between the producer
  296.    and distributor, and do not involve VENDINFO or Rams' Island
  297.    Software.

  302. It is important that producers not forfeit any legal or copyright
  303. protections by making their distribution policy available to you in
  304. VENDINFO form.  As a condition of use of VendPrcs, you agree that
  305. every such producer shall have the benefit of these understandings:

  308.    Distribution of the product is expressly prohibited, except as
  309.    specifically authorized by the producer.

  311.    The producer may revoke any permissions granted you, by notifying
  312.    you in writing.

  325. User Groups, Mail-Order Disk Vendors, CD-ROM publishers, and BBS

  327. VENDINFO toolset, provided they convey a complete and unaltered copy of
  328. the shareware version of this product, and provided they claim no
  329. ownership of these products.

  331. Distribution by other channels, and distribution of modified versions,
  332. are also allowed, but only under the terms of the attached VENDINFO data
  333. record, which is hereby incorporated by reference.  Any distribution
  334. satisfying all the distribution requirements expressed in that data

  337. Permission to distribute these products is not transferable, assignable,
  338. saleable, or franchisable.  Each vendor wishing to distribute these
